Specialist – Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA)

 

The Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, at UT Health San Antonio is recruiting for a faculty Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner Acute Care or Physician Assistant). The candidate must be currently licensed or eligible for licensing as a Physician Assistant or Master Prepared Nurse Practitioner in Texas and credentialed by the state to practice as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner Acute Care.  Prescriptive authority and experience in pediatrics including emergency department or PICU is preferred.

The Child Abuse Division is housed at CHRISTUS Children’s Pavilion at Center for Miracles and is the only provider of child maltreatment assessments and evaluations in the region. The APP will join 3 child abuse pediatricians, 1 RN and 3 fellows.

Expectations:

  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems.
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Work directly with child abuse pediatrics faculty, fellow physicians, nursing staff, social work staff, medical consultants, primary medical providers, and community agencies such as Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement.
  • Conduct medical evaluations of patients referred to the Child Abuse Division to provide clinical assessments and to help optimize the care of patients with known or suspected abuse/neglect.
  • Provide evidence-based expertise in child abuse/neglect care and management to maximize clinical outcomes for the patient and family.
  • Conduct outpatient medical evaluations at Center for Miracles
  • Conduct inpatient consultations at 3 area hospitals. 
  • Rotate in the 24/7 on-call schedule with the Child Abuse Pediatricians. All calls will be staffed with the back-up Child Abuse Pediatrician contemporaneously.  
  • Attend weekly clinical rounds and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Function as a liaison between the primary medical team, medical consultants, subspecialty services, nurses, social workers, community care    providers and community agencies (Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement).
  • Provide expert witness testimony, upon receipt of subpoenas concerning medical evaluations completed for concerns of abuse or neglect, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Be committed to continual learning opportunities, including review of publications applicable to practice improvement, participating in weekly case review meetings, and by taking advantage of available learning opportunities.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.

 

Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.

 

Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:

 

Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.

 

Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.

 

Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.

 

Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each fiscal year.

 

FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.

 

Discounts- Employees enjoy a range of discounts on services, tickets, and gym membership.
