The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Dentistry seeks a visionary individual with an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, clinical expertise, academic leadership and mentoring as its new Chair of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry.

 

The largest of the five departments in the School of Dentistry, the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry is comprised of the divisions of general dentistry, prosthodontics, dental diagnostic sciences, and dental public health. In addition to participating in the teaching of the DDS program, the department administers several advanced education programs: AEGD, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial radiology and dental public health. The department also has robust and diverse research activities in biological, biomaterial and clinical sciences. Thus, the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry has a very strong presence in all 3 missions of the University of Texas Health at San Antonio School of Dentistry, actively participating in teaching, research and service. Outstanding clinical facilities exist in its Center for Oral Health Care and Research, which offers an environment that supports the finest in multispecialty patient care and research. The rapidly growing research and clinical enterprises of UT Health San Antonio provides unlimited possibilities for collaborations across campus with the other four schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences.

 

Reporting to the Dean, the Chair is the administrative leader for this diverse department. The Chair is appointed to a full-time, tenure-track position. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized scholar with a strong track record of academic excellence and professional accomplishments.  Candidates with an outstanding record of administration in dental education including leadership experience in operational and financial management is required. A track record of funded research and/or clinical outreach programs is expected. She/he will have a DDS/DMD from a CODA accredited school or equivalent foreign training, and should be eligible for dental licensing in the state of Texas.

 

Established in 1959, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (dba: UT Health San Antonio), one of six health institutions in The University of Texas System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas and is a major center for patient care in South Texas.  UT Health San Antonio is a comprehensive academic health center with 3,383 students enrolled in five schools:  the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions. 

 

The School of Dentistry was founded in 1970 and graduated its first class of 14 members in 1974 and rapidly rose to a level of national and international distinction.  Today, the School graduates more than 100 dentists every year.  With more than 200 dedicated full faculty members in 10 fields of study, the School of Dentistry is on the cutting edge of both oral health research and the delivery of patient care.  The School has consistently ranked in the top of all schools of dentistry in the country, and is currently ranked 7th among all dental schools for the number of grants received from the National Institutes of Health.  The School has 562 students enrolled in the 2019-2020 School Year, which includes students in the DDS Program, Post-doctoral/Advanced Education, and Dental Hygiene. 

 

The School of Dentistry mission is to improve oral health through excellence in education, research, patient care, and community engagement. 

 

All faculty appointments are designated as security sensitive positions.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.


Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Employees and their dependents can also receive discounted copays and coinsurance when using UT Health Physicians, a network of 800 premier physicians including more than 100 specialists.


Dental - Three dental insurance plan options are available for employees and their families through Delta Dental Insurance Company, two PPOs and one dental HMO plan. Both PPO plans allow employees to choose any licensed dentist.


Vision- Fully insured Vision Care benefits are offered by Superior Vision Services. Two vision plan options that offer either standard or enhanced vision benefits. Life Employees receive $40,000 of group term life insurance and $40,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance for free, with options to purchase additional employee and dependent coverage for both at group rates.


Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.


Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:


Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.


Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.


Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.


Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.


FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.


Discounts- Employees enjoy a range of discounts on services, tickets, and gym membership.
