The Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS) under the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) in conjunction with the NCI-Designated Mays Cancer Center (MCC) is seeking two applicants for open rank faculty positions (Tenure or Non-Tenure). The successful faculty will join the Population Health Sciences department with membership in our MCC Population Science and Prevention (PSP) Research Program.
 
PHS has twenty-one faculty from diverse disciplines (e.g., social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, health systems science, and clinical informatics). Active areas of research include social determinants of health, cancer survivorship, and cancer health disparities. Similarly, the MCC PSP is embedded in a National Cancer Institute-designated Clinical Cancer Center with more than 58 faculty conducting research in areas of basic science, translational research, clinical research and prevention, and personalized risk assessment.  Both programs have established research portfolios in cancer care delivery, cancer screening, cancer survivorship, and dissemination and implementation of science research to promote health equity in rural and medically underserved communities. Our vibrant group of multidisciplinary faculty conducts research on a wide range of health issues, and there are opportunities to collaborate with clinical, and other faculty across the academic campuses of UTHSA.
 
Our goal is to recruit two faculty members who will establish meaningful community-based and community-engaged research in our diverse and medically underserved 38-county catchment area. The Department of PHS at UTHSA and the MCC are committed to reducing the burden of chronic illnesses among diverse populations, increasing prevention efforts, and facilitating access to care that is culturally sensitive and contextually appropriate. 
 
Position Description: The successful Faculty candidates will be expected to establish an innovative, independent, collaborative, and extramurally funded research program with a focus on community-based participatory and/or community engagement research. The successful candidate will have track records of creativity and productivity, a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and growing community of researchers, and will be expected to mount a productive and innovative research program, with a specialty in community-engaged research. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research addresses Population Health Sciences priorities including but not limited to, engaging community voice, community development and resiliency, health disparities, and multi-level approaches to addressing systemic health inequity. We expect the successful candidate to have an established portfolio that includes community-based participatory research (CBPR), use of mixed methods, and considerable expertise working with medically underserved communities. The appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience. Faculty will be eligible to apply for grants from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), the second-largest cancer research-funding agency in the US.  CPRIT also provides competitive faculty recruitment awards for instigators new to Texas. 
 
Requirements and Educational Experience: Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum requirements:
•    PhD., DrPH, or equivalent in Public Health, Population Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or a related field
•    Established a successful research agenda
•    Experience with successful research proposal development and peer-reviewed publications focused on one of the research priorities listed above
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A successful candidate will have strong training in CBPR methods with substantial professional experience in community engagement and mixed-methods research. Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise to establish and manage a research program to develop novel methods in CBPR or innovative applications of existing methods. Candidates must possess excellent communication writing and academic leadership skills.  
 
Working conditions: Work is performed in an office environment. The position requires travel to community sites, and regional/national travel and to attend professional and grant meetings, as well as meetings for the University of Texas System.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.

 

Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Employees and their dependents can also receive discounted copays and coinsurance when using UT Health Physicians, a network of 800 premier physicians including more than 100 specialists.

 

Dental - Three dental insurance plan options are available for employees and their families through Delta Dental Insurance Company, two PPOs and one dental HMO plan. Both PPO plans allow employees to choose any licensed dentist.

 

Vision- Fully insured Vision Care benefits are offered by Superior Vision Services. Two vision plan options that offer either standard or enhanced vision benefits. Life Employees receive $40,000 of group term life insurance and $40,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance for free, with options to purchase additional employee and dependent coverage for both at group rates.

 

Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.

 

Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:

 

Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.

 

Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.

 

Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.

 

Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each fiscal year.

 

FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.

 

Discounts- Employees enjoy a range of discounts on services, tickets, and gym membership.
