Chief Nursing Officer

The School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio is delighted to invite candidates to apply for the Chief Nursing Officer. Primarily working at Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson, the position is housed in the School of Nursing where the candidate will receive faculty rank. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Role Summary:

The Chief Nursing Officer in Cancer Care (CNOCC) for the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center will report directly to the Director of the Mays Cancer Center and to the Vice Dean of Practice and Engagement at the School of Nursing. The CNOCC will work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer of UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the specialty leaders (Chief of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Chair of Radiation Oncology, and Chief of Surgical Oncology). This position is an Assistant Dean (Oncology Nursing) in the UT Health Nursing Clinical Enterprise.

Faculty rank will be determined by experience and scholarship. Effort distribution is 90% practice and operational administration, and 10% faculty effort which will be phased in or expanded as determined by School of Nursing Dean and Executive Director of Mays Cancer Center. The CNOCC will oversee clinical nursing standards for oncology nursing in the cancer clinics (Hematology & Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology) as well as in infusion and evolving Stem Cell Transplant Program.

The CNOCC will develop and work towards an integrated education and practice environment with the School of Nursing creating opportunities for nursing practice, scholarship and research to become a national model for oncology nursing care.  The position will liaise and work with the future Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of the UT Health Specialty Research Hospital for seamless transition of healthcare delivery between inpatient and outpatient venues.

Responsibilities:

  1. Continue to develop organizational structure for nursing at the Mays Cancer Center to provide integrated interprofessional, patient-and family centered oncology care across all disciplines (Hematology & Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Cancer Medicine Specialties), and liaise with nursing leaders at all other UT Health venues where cancer care is delivered.
  2. Develop a nursing management team to meet the mission of the Mays Cancer Center.
  3. Work closely with the Chief Medical Officer and the Physician leaders of Hematology & Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Cancer Medical Specialties practicing at Mays Cancer Center to develop and maintain seamless, collegial, patient centered cancer nursing care.
  4. Develop a program for hiring, mentoring and retaining a professional nursing team.
  5. Create performance standards and peer review methodologies.
  6. Increase the number ONS certified RNs and ongoing continuing education in oncology nursing.
  7. Oversee development of quality improvement activities, patient-and family education programs and palliative care and survivorship programs.
  8. Work with faculty and doctoral students to develop a research agenda for Mays Cancer Center nursing.
  9. Maintain opportunities to teach and mentor doctoral students.

Qualifications:
            Education

  • Master’s degree in nursing required
  • Doctorate – preferred

Experience

UT Health San Antonio seeks a transformational leader with intellectual breadth, strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated expertise in leadership and cancer nursing.

  • 7 - 10 years of experience in a senior management position in an ambulatory healthcare setting.
  • Experience with Joint Commission accreditation processes is required.

Licensures and Certifications

  • Current Texas RN Licensure is required
  • ONS National Certification - preferred
