The Center for Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH) under the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor level for its broad-based portfolio of community-engaged research, dissemination and implementation (D&I) science, patient-centered outcomes research, T3/T4 translational research, and health services research. The ReACH Center’s mission is to bring together community partners and professionals from diverse disciplines to advance population health through pragmatic research that improves health outcomes, addresses health inequities, and respects culture. Founded in 2010, the ReACH Center has a diverse array of federally funded and state-funded research projects addressing improved health and quality of life for communities in South Texas and beyond, including rural health equity and access, shared decision making, practice change and transformation to support evidence-based care for patients, and telementoring of the health care workforce.

Opportunities are available for collaboration and affiliations with clinical departments in the Long School of Medicine, the new UT School of Public Health San Antonio, the Schools of Nursing, Dentistry, and Health Professions, and Dell Medical School at UT Austin. For candidates at the Associate Professor level, leadership opportunities within the ReACH Center and across UT Health San Antonio are available based on the experience and interests of the candidate.

Primary responsibilities of the position center on developing a balanced portfolio of research that aligns with the mission of the ReACH Center. The selected candidate will be expected to serve as principal investigator on externally funded projects and as co-investigator on interdisciplinary research teams with faculty and staff from ReACH and other departments, centers, and institutes across UT Health San Antonio. Other responsibilities will include mentoring junior faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, and graduate students; engaging community partners; representing ReACH at regional, national, and international meetings; and publishing papers in leading journals. Part-time patient care and teaching opportunities are available to complement research activities.

 Qualifications:

(1) A doctoral degree; (2) a track record of obtaining peer‐reviewed external funding and publishing in the above areas; (3) excellent communication skills; (4) a strong work ethic; and (5) enthusiasm for team science.

Application materials consist of an online application to include a personal statement outlining qualifications and interests, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for 3 professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Tenure status will be decided based on the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

 About the ReACH Center:

The ReACH Center serves as a hub for health services and community-engaged research among the various institutions in the San Antonio area, with a focus on the 38 counties of South Texas extending to the US-Mexico border. Directed by Joel Tsevat, MD, MPH, the ReACH Center has an interdisciplinary faculty supported by a wide array of federal and state funders including NIH, AHRQ, HRSA and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The ReACH Center works closely with the Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science (IIMS), which has been the home of UT Health San Antonio’s Institutional CTSA since 2008. Locally and regionally, the IIMS serves as the academic home for clinical and translational research and science. Its numerous research resources include biostatistics, epidemiology, and research design support; biomedical informatics support including access to REDCap and data warehousing; community-engaged research; pilot grants; degree and certificate programs; a KL2 career development program; a TL1 pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training grant; and regulatory support.

The ReACH Center supports two research cores related to telehealth and telementoring and D&I science. These cores offer a wide range of services and provide access to technologies, services, training, and expert consultation.

The Telementoring Research and Evaluation Core houses the UT Health San Antonio Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) Service Center. The ECHO model aims to “move knowledge, not people” by connecting subject-matter experts at academic centers with community health practitioners serving patient populations with limited access to expertise in given areas. Our ECHO hub has recently attained Superhub designation – 1 of only 14 Superhubs in the U.S. – signifying that it is able to train other centers to develop their own ECHO programs.

The D&I Science Consultation Core is led by Erin Finley, PhD, MPH, a nationally recognized expert in implementation of evidence-based practices. The D&I Science Consultation Core at ReACH provides methodological expertise in designing evidence-based implementation research and practice efforts that can be successfully applied in real-world settings. Faculty and staff with diverse and complementary expertise within the core are available to consult on grants and papers, collaborate, and support investigators in conducting high-quality D&I research.
