The Department of Radiation Oncology
Position Summary
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider, either a certified physician assistant or nurse practitioner with excellent clinical skills who is committed to expanding access to cancer care to join our faculty.
The Radiation Oncology APP will function collaboratively with attending physicians and as a key member of the interdisciplinary oncology team. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced clinical judgment, a high degree of professional autonomy, and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team to deliver exemplary, evidence-based oncology care.
Department Composition & Facilities
The ACR accredited department comprises three integrated divisions—Clinical Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics, and Radiobiology—with 20 total faculty supported by expert dosimetrists, therapists, nurses, APPs and research staff. Operations span roughly 36K sq ft of dedicated clinical and research space and are complemented by a brand-new 144 bed dedicated Multi-Specialty Research Hospital designed to support complex multidisciplinary care and seamless clinical–research integration.
Education & Training Programs
Our education ecosystem includes an ACGME accredited radiation oncology medical residency program, a CAMPEP accredited graduate medical physics education program (PhD and DMP tracks), a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics residency program, and a JRCERT accredited medical dosimetry program with faculty actively involved in curriculum design, didactics, mentorship, and scholarly development across all levels of training.
Research Environment
The department sustains a robust, NIH-funded portfolio across clinical, translational, and basic radiation sciences, with access to campus-wide cores in genomics, imaging, proteomics, and biostatistics, strong team-science collaborations across UT Health San Antonio and the Mays Cancer Center, and institutional support for pilot funding, grant development, research staff integration, and appropriately tailored protected time.
Primary Duties
- Provide comprehensive radiation oncology subspecialty care as part of an interdisciplinary team, managing all aspects of care from intake and consult, through therapy and into surveillance and survivorship.
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments and ongoing evaluations. Order, interpret and manage laboratory and radiographic studies. Within scope of practice and delegated authority, prescribe medications and adjust treatment plans as clinically indicated.
- Manage acute medical issues that arise during radiation treatment and provide acute symptom guidance for patients on therapy as well as guidance into survivorship for late effects of radiation.
- Collaborate with subspecialists and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered cancer care. Facilitate referrals to community agencies and supportive care resources.
- Document all clinical encounters and treatment decisions in accordance with UT Health San Antonio standards and compliance requirements.

Benefits Overview
UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.
Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for fulltime employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Employees and their dependents can also receive discounted copays and coinsurance when using UT Health Physicians, a network of 800 premier physicians including more than 100 specialists. Dental - Three dental insurance plan options are available for employees and their families through Delta Dental Insurance Company, two PPOs and one dental HMO plan. Both PPO plans allow employees to choose any licensed dentist.

Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.
Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:
Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each fiscal year.
