Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, responsible for receiving and reviewing invention disclosures. Researches and prepares reports regarding the patentability of such inventions.

Job Duties:

  1. Evaluates new inventions for product and market potential by conducting research and preparing reports regarding the patentability and economic value of inventions.
  2. Prepares, files, transmits, and tracks licensing applications and documentation (new licenses and renewals) to ensure accurate and timely filing.
  3. Responsible for selecting the most commercially viable inventions for patenting.
  4. Assists inventors to develop patent strategies.
  5. Receives and reviews faculty/staff/student invention disclosures.
  6. Liaison with patent attorneys on all aspects of patent applications and manages the ongoing patent prosecution by outside patent counsel to ensure the patent strategy is followed, expenses are controlled, patent copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property rights are properly protected.
  7. Manages the interaction between the patent attorneys and inventors to ensure that high-quality patents are obtained.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Computer Sciences, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate to all levels of leadership and internal/external stakeholders. Strong presentation and negotiation skills a must.
  • Strong analytical skills to resolve complex issues. Ability to be flexible and work analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Must be organized, with strong attention to detail and the ability to meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of the sensitive subject matter.
  • Must be able to interpret and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing licensing—knowledge of invention patents and processes a plus. 
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software required; institutional software systems experience is a plus.
