Job Summary:

The laboratory of Dr. Yogesh Gupta (http://ccri.uthscsa.edu/YGupta.html) at Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, University of Texas Health at San Antonio, TX is seeking an enthusiastic scientist to perform mechanistic and structural studies on protein-nucleic acid complexes implicated in human diseases.

 

Job Duties:

  1. Develops, designs, and executes large and complex research projects, reviews progress, analyses data and evaluates results.
  2. Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality; identifies potential problems and recommends and implements solutions.
  3. Consults with users to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements; collaborates in development of new techniques and instruments.
  4. Organizes, maintains the laboratory, researches and recommends equipment and maintains documentation and storage of biomaterials.
  5. Co-authors/authors scientific publications; presents at meetings and conferences; participates in acquiring research funding including writing grant proposals.
  6. Manages and reviews medical writing of study protocols, statistical analysis and study reports.
  7. Large scale expression and purification of recombinant proteins with relevance to human diseases from bacterial, insect, and mammalian cells. Biochemical and biophysical characterization of nucleic acid enzymes and their interaction with small molecules and nucleic acid substrates. Perform co-crystallization and determine the structures of protein-nucleic acid complexes using X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and other biophysical methods.
  8. Develop, design, and perform protein-nucleic acids structural biology experiments using chromatography, X-ray crystallography, surface-plasmon resonance (SPR), and Isothermal titration calorimetry with minimal supervision. Develop, design, and perform enzymatic assays to measure ATPase and methyltransferase activities of the enzymes. Screen small molecule libraries for protein-drug interactions. Work with various institutional cores, perform data analysis and interpret results. Review progress and present results regularly to the PI.
  9. Assist PI in preparation of research reports, manuscripts, papers and grant proposals for presentations and publications. Research current scientific literature to develop novel or improved research protocols; work closely with the PI, other lab staff concerning scientific, research and administrative matters.

Education:

Master's degree in related field is required.

 

Experience:

Two (2) years of related experience is required.

 

Preferred:

Ph.D. in biochemistry/structural biology, cell biology,  or cancer biology with relevant experience in structural and mechanistic studies on protein/nucleic acid complexes and drug discovery.
