Job Summary:

Under general supervision, provides routine technical assistance in performing assigned and delegated tasks in support of research projects. Responsibilities include assisting or conducting a variety of scientific experiments and research projects of limited complexity, collecting, evaluating and interpreting data for clinical and diagnostic research.  We are currently looking for a motivated Research Assistant to join the research group of Dr. Vaida Glatt at the Department of Orthopedics of the University of Texas Health and Science Center in San Antonio.

Job Duties:

  1. Provide assistance and technical support on basic research studies.
  2. Microcomputed tomography: Scanning and analysis of samples for the MicroCT core facility, maintaining equipment and updating lab databases.
  3. Works with animals.  Mammalian cell culture: maintenance, expansion, freezing of cells
  4. RNA extraction and qPCR.
  5. Histology: sectioning of paraffin-embedded tissue samples, classical stainings, immunohisto-chemistry
  6. Microscopy: bright-field microscopy, fluorescence microscopy
  7. Perform literature searches and library investigations as they relate to ongoing research and/or as assigned.
  8. Provides routine technical assistance in performing assigned and delegated tasks in support of research projects.
  9. Performs assigned clerical and technical duties in a research or clinical lab setting.
  10. Assists investigator or higher level technician with research studies, experiments and assays including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
  11. Performs routine tests with direction from supervisor, manager or higher level technician.
  12. Assists in conducting a variety of scientific experiments and research projects of limited complexity, collecting, evaluating, and interpreting data.
  13. Carries out general laboratory maintenance.

Education:

Bachelor's in a basic science is required.

Experience:

None

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Science or a related scientific field.
