Job Summary:

Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, implementing and executing public and media relations strategies and tactics in order to maintain the university’s positive brand awareness and reputation for excellence as demonstrated in its missions of education, patient care, research and community service, on local, regional and national levels. Researches topics, interviews faculty experts, writes and disseminates news releases and other communications, coordinates and manages interviews of faculty experts by the news media and assists with tracking and reporting earned media coverage to university’s executive leadership and community.  These tactics are executed in order to achieve an informed public understanding necessary to the success of the institution. Coaches team members in the highly relevant and broad-ranging implications of news media relations. This position is within the Marketing & Communications Department.


Job Duties:

  1. Provides public and media relations for the university through the researching, interviewing of content experts, writing and disseminating of news releases/advisories, news pitches, news articles/stories/features, public relations strategies and campaigns and university statements. Writes other communications products such as copywriting, scriptwriting, speechwriting, audiovisual productions and opinion/editorial pieces that are ghost written for executive leadership and faculty experts, for submission to the news media.  Performs these writing assignments in the specialized areas of science, medicine and professional health education, to support outreach to: reporters and other members of the media; print, online and broadcast news organizations; professional and trade associations; academic/professional journal organizations; the community at large; and other university stakeholders. Advises/consults with university faculty experts and executive leadership to continually strengthen the institution’s reputation and relationship with the news media.
  2. Proactively promotes and responds to incoming calls from the news media requesting interviews with faculty content experts; prepares talking points for and coordinates with faculty experts for both in-studio and on-campus interviews; escorts media members on campus; works to ensure that the university’s identity and brand are correctly portrayed in all items of earned coverage; performs all other coordination work related to the execution of the interview and resulting news story.  
  3. Performs writing assignments for institutional communications platforms, to include the university’s magazine, Mission, its news website, Newsroom, and all its myriad e-newsletters.
  4. Develops, completes and manages special projects as assigned, including those that require the writing of media releases and university statements executed as part of crisis communications plans.
  5. Produces and manages video production projects as assigned, including creating content that combines video, audio and graphics to tell a story for broadcast and social media channels
  6. Analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action, exercising independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of responsibilities.
  7. Monitors and measures effectiveness of public relations campaigns/programs using regular reporting and communicates insight to management.
  8. Performs all other duties as assigned.



Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism or related field is required. 



Five (5) years of directly related experience is required in communications, public relations, or as a journalist at a news media organization. (7+ years is preferred.)
