Laboratory Manager(Surgery)

Job Summary:
The Department of Surgery at UT Health San Antonio seeks a Manager, Laboratory to serve a growing research enterprise. The Manager, Laboratory, in coordination with department leadership, is responsible for coordinating all research activities within multiple laboratory spaces including clinical and basic science research operations, within the Department of Surgery. The Manager, Laboratory is also responsible for maintaining quality and timeliness of all laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines.
Job Duties:
· Collaborates with department leadership to develop an integrated, collaborative strategy that directly engages the university’s resources, research institutes, hospitals, the community, industry and other departments and programs to support the Department of Surgery’s goals and mission.
· Supports, fosters, and promotes a culture of innovation and research integrity within the Department and Institution.
· Creates an environment and culture that facilitates, encourages, inspires, nurtures and supports discovery by enabling and assisting faculty with identifying and securing external research funds through regional, national and international grants (institutional and individual), partnerships and contracts.
· Manages laboratory services, including workflow, administrative procedures, operations and strategic planning in order to maintain an efficient laboratory environment.
· Ensures appropriate lab compliance with accrediting agency regulations.
· Develops and implements quality control procedures and ensures documentation comply with current ISO guidelines.
· Establishes goals, and schedules for the laboratory.
· Oversees laboratory safety policies, implements training, and monitors department for compliance.
· Coordinates laboratory administration; manages and authorizes all purchasing expenditures for supplies and equipment; ensures that all required equipment is maintained and properly functioning.
· Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; planning and directing work; appraising productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handles complaints and grievances and administers discipline when necessary.
· Serves as the technical expert for equipment and safety compliance.
· Directs managers and staff on safety protocols, equipment utilization and lab safety protocols.
· Plans, organizes and supports one or more large and complex research projects according to plan; reviews progress and evaluates results.
· Participates in ongoing decisions regarding study design, data collection, and methodology.
· Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, and recommends and implements solutions.
· Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education:
Bachelors degree in basic sciences or related field is required. Master's degree is preferred.
Experience:
Five (5) years of experience with increasing responsibilities that are directly-related to the assigned laboratory is required. Requires at least two (2) years of experience in leading and/or supervising laboratory personnel and activities.

Life Employees receive $40,000 of group term life insurance and $40,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance for free, with options to purchase additional employee and dependent coverage for both at group rates.
Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.
Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:
Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.
FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.
