Job Summary:

Under general supervision, responsible for the care and treatment of laboratory animals. Monitors animal health and assists in clinical procedures and surgical operations used in laboratory experiments.

Job Duties:

1. Performs work in the care and treatment of animals used in laboratory experiments. Assists in surgical operations on animals.

2. Participates in experimental procedures. May oversee the work of assistants and the use/maintenance of animal care facilities and equipment.

3. Administers special diets or medicines to animals. Maintains all records and executes prescribed treatments to large and small animals.

4. Prepares animals for experimental procedures and provides post-procedural care. Performs post-operative duties to include administering drugs, suture removal, wound dressing and providing veterinary technical support for multiple imaging modalities. Cleans and maintains procedure and treatment rooms in order to ensure sanitary conditions.

5. Maintains daily census and records of the status of animals and special instructions through the American Association for Laboratory Animals (AALAS).

6. Maintains all daily and routine clinical/research records such as observation, weight, and behavior.

8. Assists pathology lab to include blood analyzes, operations, fecal testing and other lab procedures.

8. Trains research staff on performing basic handling and injection procedures on laboratory animals.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.


High school diploma or GED is required.


Three (3) years related experience is required.
