Job Summary:

Assist in the oversight of animal attendant staff to ensure departmental operating standards and federal regulations are followed. Provides oversight of species appropriate husbandry and associated facility and equipment operations in support of research animals maintained at the institution. Leads or mentors lower level team members.

Job Duties:

  1. Assist with developing, implementing and providing appropriate job training programs for all attendant job levels.
  2. Document and develop staff competencies, communicates performance issues and manages or adjusts work schedules.
  3. Perform Animal Attendant duties as needed.
  4. Assist with cage card identification administration and completes routine cage inventory.
  5. Perform office administration duties to include but not limited to ordering feed, bedding, supplies and equipment as needed.
  6. Assist with guidance and oversight of workflow processes.
  7. Work closely with diverse research staff to ensure proper coordination between husbandry and research activities.
  8. Periodically administers medications and treatments to laboratory animals after appropriate training to competence from qualified personnel.

Education:

High school diploma or GED is required.

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Certification (ALAT) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is required.

Experience:

Six (6) years experience performing husbandry and handling of research animals at accredited facility is preferred.

Preferred:

Laboratory Animal Technician Certification (LAT) or Technologist Certification (LATG) through American Association for Laboratory Science (AALAS) is preferred.
