Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, responsible for performing advanced accounting clerical work involved in maintaining numerous/diversified departmental accounts and records. Assists with a variety of complex financial duties within the department—lead or mentors lower-level team members.

Job Duties:

  1. Assists with answering questions and training less experienced employees with accounting responsibilities, meeting deadlines for data processing and financial requirements.
  2. Verifies and reviews daily accounting transactions to ensure consistency with stated account purpose and account activities. Assists with a variety of complex financial duties to include preparing journal entries for assigned units.
  3. Provides detailed analysis of departmental expenditures and assists with the complex expense analysis to ensure the department is successfully functioning at budgeted break-even points.
  4. Produces financial reports from all fund group sources; analyzes trends/costs, and resolves budget and accounting discrepancies. Performs reconciliations of projects for assigned divisions in various fund groups.
  5. Initiates, support, and processes common financial transactions, including but not limited to travel requisitions and reimbursements, purchase requisitions, internal transfers, and payments to individuals.
  6. Maintains electronic files by collecting and scanning records of transactions encumbered, processed, and posted to the general ledger for all projects. Maintains documentation of transactions and interactions with internal and external parties.
  7. Identifies recurring issues and questions and escalates them to lead to implement solutions.
  8. Manage customer relationships, participate in client department meetings to confirm service expectations, anticipate upcoming needs, and meet service level requirements.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned


  • An Associate degree is required. Bachelor's degree preferred.


  • Five (5) years of experience in accounting or a related field is required. Experience within higher education is preferred.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization.
  • Proficiency in applicable software programs, including PeopleSoft, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Oracle Smartview is preferred.
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must have strong attention to detail, self-starter, and problem-solving skills.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills—ability to relay information to different levels of leadership and stakeholders.
