Mental Performance Specialist

The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine University at UT Health San Antonio and the San Antonio Spurs are seeking a Mental Performance Specialist to serve as a faculty member within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Mental Performance Specialist will be part of a multidisciplinary San Antonio Spurs performance team consisting of physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and other specialists, working collaboratively to manage the wellbeing of the players and staff.  This position will office at the human performance research center located adjacent to the Spurs practice facility. 

Overview: 

  • Seeking an innovative Mental Performance Specialist with experience in elite athletics.  
  • Candidates must hold a Master’s or PhD in Sport Psychology or a related field or extensive experience in the sport-related consulting field.
  • The incumbent will join a multidisciplinary health and performance team and will be assigned a faculty position with an appropriate rank based on experience. 

Skills & Interests: 

  • 3+ years of contemporary experience working with elite (high-level collegiate, Olympic, and/or professional) athletes, military special forces, or professional performing artists strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional team-building and interpersonal skills, a demonstrated history of effective communication within a multidisciplinary team, and a proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have significant applied training and/or applied experience in sport psychology, Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CPMC) by AASP (Association for Applied Sport Psychology) preferred.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Capable of providing confidential performance services in a nontraditional setting.
  • Experience in presenting education and workshop material to groups of varying sizes.
  • Interest in helping build an academically based human optimization program.

Key Responsibilities: Spurs

  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Player Performance and Wellness, Player Development coaching staff, and VP of Player Development and Organizational Growth to develop an integrated mental performance model, as well as wellness programming/resources for players.
  • Develop a standardized education program on the topics of mental health, mental performance, and general wellness strategies.
  • Provide education regarding integrating mental skills into different aspects of the training process (e.g., practice, pre-competition, competition, and recovery).
  • Assist in creating, developing, and maintaining a list of experienced resources relating to mental performance and wellness. 
  • Presence at the practice facility for player and staff visits (can include virtual or programmatic planning meetings).
  • Travel with the San Antonio Spurs team as needed.   
  • Experience in utilizing empirically based best practices in mental health, well-being, and human performance.
  • Collaborate with researchers and clinicians on research focused cognitive and psychological factors that influence human performance.
  • Collaborate in the development of a business model for the department to serve community athletes, including contract work, private practice, and online platforms.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.


Medical- UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Employees and their dependents can also receive discounted copays and coinsurance when using UT Health Physicians, a network of 800 premier physicians including more than 100 specialists.


Dental - Three dental insurance plan options are available for employees and their families through Delta Dental Insurance Company, two PPOs and one dental HMO plan. Both PPO plans allow employees to choose any licensed dentist.


Vision- Fully insured Vision Care benefits are offered by Superior Vision Services. Two vision plan options that offer either standard or enhanced vision benefits. Life Employees receive $40,000 of group term life insurance and $40,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance for free, with options to purchase additional employee and dependent coverage for both at group rates.


Retirement- Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.


Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:


Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.


Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.


Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.


Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.


FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.


Discounts- Employees enjoy a range of discounts on services, tickets, and gym membership.
